The question this section is actually answering isn’t “how fast is this server.” It’s whether the NVMe 4 plan Bluehost recommends for OpenClaw can actually run OpenClaw well. Every number below exists to answer that, not to stand on its own.

At idle, with OpenClaw already installed, the server used 685 MiB of 3.8 GiB RAM (18%) and 2.6 GB of 96 GB disk (3%), with no swap configured.
That last point carries the same real consequence it has on every Bluehost VPS tested. If memory runs out, processes get killed rather than swapped to disk. This plan has more room than the entry tiers before that becomes a concern, but it’s still a hard limit worth watching if you connect several channels or run multiple agents at once.
Does this plan handle OpenClaw’s concurrent workload?
OpenClaw’s job is routing requests across multiple channels and providers at the same time, so what matters here isn’t raw CPU speed, it’s whether a second core actually helps or is just sitting there unused.

Going from one core to two produced a 2.03x multiplier, close to full scaling efficiency. That number alone says both cores are genuinely doing work, but the fairness figure is what confirms it. A stddev of 59.50 between the two threads (18,572 events average, each thread landing within roughly 0.3% of that average) means neither core is starved while the other carries the load.
On a single-vCPU plan there’s nothing to check here, since there’s only one core to begin with; on this plan, that fairness number is the evidence that the second core is a real, usable resource rather than a number on a spec sheet.
The stress test adds a second layer of evidence, because it runs sustained load rather than a 10-second burst. One number in that data is worth pulling out specifically: the CPU stressor reported 3,824.60 bogo ops/sec measured against real time, but only 1,918.44 bogo ops/sec measured against usr+sys time (the CPU’s actual working time, excluding time spent waiting). That gap, roughly 2x, is normal and expected on a 2-vCPU system: each of the two workers ran close to a full core’s worth of usr+sys time (357.70 seconds combined against a 180-second wall clock), meaning both cores stayed genuinely busy for the full three minutes rather than one worker finishing early and idling.
What this means in practice:
Both cores respond to load, not just one, confirmed under both a quick burst and three minutes of sustained pressure

Will file operations feel responsive?
OpenClaw’s actual footprint on disk, based on what I found during Server Management, is small and frequent: a SQLite auth store, per-agent config files, session logs.
That’s random I/O, not large sequential transfers, so the number that matters most here is the random 4K result, not the sequential throughput figures that look more impressive on paper.

In plain terms, reading the auth store and writing a session log don’t wait on each other, even under concurrent random access at this IOPS level.
Sequential throughput was strong too, but that pattern doesn’t reflect what OpenClaw’s own files actually generate, so it matters less here than it would for a database or media-heavy workload.
One thing worth flagging honestly rather than glossing over: the random 4K test shows a noticeably wider IOPS standard deviation (roughly 4,100) than the sequential tests (roughly 350). That’s typical for random I/O on shared cloud storage, where individual samples swing more than a steady sequential stream, but it does mean any single moment could see IOPS dip below the 45,700 average during a burst of contention.
The average held strong across the full 30-second window either way, with no indication of a sustained slowdown.
Memory access was fast enough to register as instant at millisecond precision on both sequential read and write (6,762.68 MiB/sec write, 7,755.22 MiB/sec read). That matters less for raw speed and more for one specific thing: OpenClaw reading session and conversation state shouldn’t introduce any lag of its own before the agent starts reasoning.
Will messages actually get through, reliably?
This is the question that matters most for a messaging-routing product, and it’s also where a single fast result would be the wrong thing to trust.

Both tests hit the same server and agreed on every measure within a fraction of a percent. That agreement, not the download number itself, is the actual finding.
A single 3.8 Gbps result could have been a lucky routing path or a momentarily uncongested route; two independent tests landing within half a megabit of each other means this is what the connection reliably delivers, not what it delivered once.
For OpenClaw, every message sent to WhatsApp, Telegram, or Slack, and every API call to whichever LLM provider is connected, rides this connection. Consistent, zero-loss delivery matters more here than peak speed, since a dropped packet mid-conversation is a worse experience for an end user than a slightly slower response.
Verdict on Performance
The real question was whether NVMe 4 gives OpenClaw enough to actually do its job, not just post good numbers, and the evidence supports that for light to moderate use:
CPU: scales close to perfectly (2.03x across two cores), confirmed under both a quick burst and three minutes of sustained load with zero failures
Disk: handles the small, frequent file pattern OpenClaw’s auth and session files actually generate, with an honest note that random I/O showed more variance than sequential, typical for shared cloud storage
Network: two independent tests agreed within a fraction of a percent of each other, the stronger signal than either result alone, with zero packet loss on both
The honest limit is memory. At 3.8 GiB with no swap, this plan has meaningfully more headroom than Bluehost’s single-vCPU tiers, but it is still a ceiling, not a cushion.
If you’re running one or two channels with typical message volume, this tier holds up cleanly under everything tested here. If you’re planning multiple concurrent agents, several high-traffic channels, or heavy simultaneous conversation load, that’s exactly the point where NVMe 8 or NVMe 16 stop being an upsell and start being the tier that actually fits.
Ease of Use
I tested the full path from finding OpenClaw VPS Hosting to configuring the server and completing checkout, covering registration, first login, and server management once everything was running.
1. Registration
Getting to OpenClaw VPS Hosting starts from the main navigation. Under the AI & Developers menu, OpenClaw Hosting sits in the Automation column next to n8n Hosting, Hermes Agent Hosting, and Claude Code Hosting.
The OpenClaw landing page opens on a plan selection screen rather than dropping you straight into configuration. Three tiers are shown side by side, NVMe 4 marked Recommended, NVMe 8, and NVMe 16, each listing vCPU count, RAM, storage, unmetered bandwidth, infrastructure support, and access to multiple data centers.
I went with NVMe 4, the recommended tier, at 2 vCPUs, 4 GB DDR5 RAM, and 100 GB NVMe storage.
Choosing a plan carried me into the Configure Your Server page, the same six-step layout used across Bluehost’s VPS lineup. This page is where every meaningful decision happens before an account exists, so it’s worth explaining what each step actually does before covering what I chose.
Six numbered sections make up the page:

The banner at the top read “Pre-configured: OpenClaw · NVMe 4” from the moment the page loaded, correctly reflecting both the product I’d arrived to buy and the tier Bluehost’s own plan page recommends for it.
Every step below carried that same accuracy through:
Location: Ashburn, United States, pre-selected. Eight other regions remain available: Phoenix, Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, Mumbai, Sydney, Singapore, and Toronto.

I opened the Software step manually to verify the selection rather than take the summary view at face value, and confirmed OpenClaw was genuinely the tile highlighted and selected, not a display artifact.
Two optional steps followed. Support & Security offered the same Premium Support – Recurring add-on at +$150/mo with a 15-minute response SLA, which I left unchecked.
AI Credits offered unified LLM access supporting Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok through a single API key and bill, which I left at not added. Advanced options offered the same Extra IPs slider, hostname field, and SSH key field, all left at defaults.
Continuing to checkout carried every setting into account creation: Create Account (email and password, or one-click sign-up through Google, Apple, or GitHub) and Billing Information (card, Google Pay, or PayPal, plus standard address fields).

My take: This is the checkout experience working exactly as it should. Arriving from the OpenClaw landing page meant every field, location, hardware, and software, came pre-filled correctly and stayed that way through every step I checked. Nothing here needed a second look or a manual correction.
2. Dashboard
Bluehost calls its main account interface Account Manager, and that’s where every purchase drops you after checkout, regardless of what you just bought. The page opens with a personal greeting, “Hi, [name]!”, next to a “Currently managing” dropdown for switching between properties on the account.
Below that sits a card for whatever site is currently selected, in my case an existing property rather than the new OpenClaw server, showing its domain, a Rename option, an Add Email shortcut, and Manage Site and Edit Site buttons.

None of this reflects the OpenClaw purchase I had just completed. I clicked Hosting in the sidebar to find the actual server.
My take: This dashboard is a general account hub for the entire Bluehost product line, not a landing page tuned to a fresh purchase. A first-time OpenClaw buyer gets a personal greeting, metrics for an unrelated site, and rotating upsells before anything acknowledges the server they just paid for.
3. Server Management
Next, after looking over the Account Manager dashboard, I wanted to see how easy the actual server management felt once you got past the general account view, so I clicked Hosting in the sidebar to find the server directly and check what Bluehost surfaces once you’re looking at the instance itself.
The page listed it as Standard VPS – NVMe 4, with an internal reference code, Disk Storage at 3% of 100GB used, Server Status showing Online, an IP address with a one-click copy button, and a Server Image field reading “openclaw on Ubuntu 24.04,” confirming the correct software had actually deployed.
Four buttons sit below it: Start Server (grayed out since it was already running), Reboot Server, Power Off Server, and Open Terminal for full browser-based root access with no SSH client needed.
I clicked Manage to open the individual VPS Overview page, split into the same five tabs used across Bluehost’s VPS products: Overview, License, Access, SSH Keys, and AI Tooling. The Overview tab confirmed the Server Image again, labeled “OpenClaw on Ubuntu 24.04” with a Reimage button next to it.
Below that sit Disk Storage, Server Status, Data Center, IP Address, and Root Password, with Root Password offering a Reset Password link rather than displaying credentials outright. The Data Center read Ashburn, United States, matching exactly what was selected during plan configuration.
Right next to the Server Image, a second Manage button sits separately from the page-level one I’d already used to get here. That button is worth calling out specifically.
Clicking it dropped me directly into OpenClaw’s own live dashboard, not another Bluehost settings page, with no separate login screen or authentication step in between. One click from the Bluehost VPS Overview page, and I was looking at OpenClaw’s actual assistant chat interface.
At first glance, the interface looked fully set up. An active model already listed as gpt-5.5 through openai, reasoning effort set to Medium, a “Ready to chat” status directly under the assistant’s name, four suggested starting prompts, and a sessions sidebar already showing a Main Session.
I clicked “Check system health,” one of the suggested prompts, to see how the assistant would respond.
It failed immediately, with a clear, specific error:
“Agent failed before reply: No API key found for provider ‘openai’.” The message pointed to the exact auth store location, /var/lib/openclaw/.openclaw/agents/main/agent/openclaw-agent.sqlite, and gave the actual fix, run openclaw agents add to configure authentication for the agent, or copy portable static auth profiles from the main agentDir.
So the model being listed and the interface reading “Ready to chat” does not mean OpenClaw is actually usable yet.
No API key ships with the server, meaning you still need to connect your own provider credentials before the assistant can respond to anything. This is a genuinely useful thing to know before you get here. Don’t take the pre-selected model or the “Ready” status as confirmation that OpenClaw will work out of the box. It won’t, until you add a key.
One thing worth flagging directly: this test was run without purchasing Bluehost’s AI Credits add-on during configuration, the optional step covered earlier that gives you unified access to Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok through a single API key.
That add-on resolves this exact error, since it provides a working key for you automatically rather than leaving you to add your own provider credentials by hand.
If you skip AI Credits and go the route I did, you’ll need to run openclaw agents add yourself once you’re in, or copy portable static auth profiles from the main agentDir, before the assistant can actually respond to anything.
My take: Getting from Bluehost’s dashboard into OpenClaw’s live interface in one click is still genuinely fast and well built, better than anything else I tested. But “Ready to chat” isn’t accurate here. The assistant looks configured and isn’t, and if you follow the suggested prompts on first login without adding AI Credits at checkout, you’ll hit the same authentication error I did. The error message itself deserves credit, specific and actionable, pointing to the exact file and the exact command to fix it.
Level of Support
Bluehost gives you three ways to reach support from inside Account Manager: a Knowledge Base, a phone line, and Chat with Support, all reachable from the help icon.
I tested Live Chat with two technical questions, then checked the Knowledge Base separately.
Live Chat
Getting to an actual answer took a few extra clicks this time. Opening Chat with Support first asks whether you need help with existing products or want to renew a service.
Choosing “Help Renew Services” led to a second question about renewing versus discontinuing, neither of which fit what I was there for, so I backed out with “Return to Main Menu” and started over, this time selecting “Support for Existing Products.”
That routed through one more irrelevant prompt, a notice about Microsoft 365 billing changes, before finally landing on “How can I help you today?” and accepting a real question.
I asked the same kernel module question used across every review: whether the OpenClaw VPS supports custom kernel modules or whether Bluehost manages the kernel. The answer confirmed that OpenClaw runs on a Self-Managed VPS, meaning root access and full control over the environment, including kernel modules.
It walked through the actual commands: modprobe or insmod to load a module, installing kernel headers if the module isn’t already available, and adding it to /etc/modules-load.d/ to persist across reboots. That’s a specific, usable answer.
My follow-up asked where OpenClaw stores API keys for the LLM providers it routes requests to, and how those keys are protected if someone gained access to the server.
Before the answer arrived, the chat asked “Did this information help you resolve your issue?”, a premature prompt that fired before I’d actually gotten a response.
I said yes to move past it, then had to resend the exact same question a second time before getting a real answer. That’s worth flagging directly: the flow briefly assumed my second question was a confirmation on the first, rather than a new question in its own right.
The actual answer, once it arrived, was direct and did not soften anything:
API keys live in OpenClaw’s configuration file on the VPS, inside an environment variables block in the JSON config, editable through the dashboard’s Config Editor

That’s a genuinely important finding surfaced through a straightforward support answer rather than something buried in documentation, an assistant that stores multiple providers’ API keys in plaintext, with security resting entirely on how well you lock down the server around it.
One more thing worth knowing before you rely on this channel for anything urgent: if an AI-generated answer here doesn’t resolve your issue, you can escalate to a human agent rather than settling for the automated response.
The Knowledge Base search interface surfaces this option directly too, with a “Need extra help? Sign in to connect with a live agent” prompt sitting right below AI-generated answers.
My take: Once past the menu detour at the start, both answers were specific and technically accurate, and the second one delivered a real security finding rather than reassurance. The premature “did this help” prompt and having to resend a question is a rough edge worth knowing about, but it didn’t cost accuracy in the end.
Knowledge Base
The Knowledge Base homepage opens with a prominent “How can we help?” search bar, framed by a handful of suggested queries covering common topics like cPanel dashboard use, WordPress site creation, webmail access, and account settings.
Below that, a “We’re here to guide you to the next step” carousel highlights featured resources, a WordPress getting-started guide was showing when I visited.
Further down, a “Find information by topic” section organizes the whole library into nine category cards: Bluehost AI Products, Self-Managed VPS, WordPress, Yoast SEO, DNS, AI Website Builder, Email, cPanel, and Dedicated Server.
Each card lists a few representative articles directly on the homepage rather than making you click in blind, and OpenClaw already shows up twice before any search: “Getting Started with OpenClaw” appears under both Bluehost AI Products and Self-Managed VPS. The page closes with a direct contact option for anyone who hasn’t found what they need in the articles themselves.
Then I used the search feature directly, searching “openclaw” to see what a targeted query would surface beyond what the homepage cards already showed. That returned 25 results, spread across VPS (21), AI Products (11), Dedicated Servers (9), Other Applications (9), Advance Hosting (3), Hosting (1), and Bluehost (1).
The result list covers a genuine range: getting started guides, API connection instructions, server hardening, purchasing through either a Self-Managed VPS or a Virtual Dedicated Server, an installation-requirements overview for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and a piece connecting Bluehost’s own AI Credits to OpenClaw.
I opened “Reimage Your Server for OpenClaw Installation” to check depth. The article opens with an embedded video walkthrough before the written steps even start, then covers two full procedures:

Overall Verdict on Support
The core technical answers held up well. The kernel module response gave real, usable commands, and the API key question surfaced a finding that matters more than most support answers do. OpenClaw stores multiple providers’ credentials in plaintext, with no encryption of its own, leaving security entirely up to how well the server itself is locked down.
That’s the kind of answer a reader deciding whether to trust OpenClaw with real API keys needs to see.
